Background on Mine
The mine, also known as the Bellampalli opencast coal mining project-II, has a designed capacity of 0.6 million tonnes per annum. It is operated by Singareni Collieries Company Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India. Until 2003 the mine operated as an underground mine over a ML of 66.15 Ha. The project received the environment clearance for its conversion to opencast mine and in increase in ML area to 191.98 Ha on 11 September 2006 and was called Bellampalli opencast coal mining project-II.[1]
Mining operations were temporally stopped from November 2011 to 31 March 2016 due to want of forest land. Mining operations are restarted from 1 April 2016 after diversion of balance forestland and request for expansion in capacity to 1 MTPA is pending with the MoEF&CC.[2]
