Background
In 2000, the plant was proposed.[10]
The plant was built to meet the growing electricity demand in the country.[10]
As of December 2007, the country's demand increased by about 8% per annum. The anticipated demand in 2012, 2017, and 2025 were 7,732 MW, 11,291 MW, and 19,312 MW, respectively.[10] Thus more than 5,000 MW of capacity was needed to be urgently built by 2015, and around 20,000 MW of capacity should be necessitated by 2025 to meet the future demand, taking account 25% of the reserve margin. Again in 2007, Japan International Cooperation Agency conducted feasibility studies.
In July 2014, construction of the plant started.[11]
In 2017, 278 MW of the plant was commissioned. The power plant was partly commissioned earlier in Open Cycle, which was handed over to NWPGCL for commercial operation in May 2017.[12]
In 2018, the remaining 132 MW of the plant was commissioned.[12]
