Background on Mine
Bhivkund Opencast Coal Mining Project of 2.27 MTPA capacity with an additional coal washery facility of 2.27 MTPA on an area of 1436.20 ha was allocated on July 17, 2008".[2] The project was to be located in Wardha Valley Coalfields, Tehsil Ballarpur, District Chandrapur, Maharashtra and developed by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco). The coal ministry had given an in-principle approval to Mahagenco for the mine to be developed by its special purpose vehicle M/s Aurangabad Power Company Limited for setting up of 500 MW Greenfield Power Project."[2] The project was finally abandoned because of its location within the dense forest and closeness to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve.[3]
