Background on Units 1-3
The existing power station began as a 475 megawatt (MW) power station owned by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MSPGCL), a Maharashtra government owned company. It comprised one 55MW unit, which was taken offline in 2010, and two 210 MW units built in 1979-1982.[2]
Unit 2 was retired in 2017.[3]
Units 4 and 5
Unit 4 (500 MW) was commissioned on March 7, 2012.[4]
Unit 5 (also 500 MW) was completed in June 2012.[5]
Unit 6
As of November 2011, the company reported that it had acquired land, fuel, and environmental clearance for Bhusawal TPS Unit 6, a 660 MW expansion.[6]
Environmental Clearance was obtained in November 2012.[7]
In April 2017, the company applied to extend the Environmental Clearance's validity.[8] The Expert Appraisal Committee recommended the extension for an additional three years on November 14, 2019, subject to a few additional conditions.[9]
In 2019, state-run engineering firm BHEL announced it "bagged" an order from Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) for emission controls at the unit. The revised order value for the total project was now around ₹3,750 crore.[10]
In March 2020, plant sponsor MSPGCL submitted an amended application for environmental clearance that included plans for pollution controls.[11]
According to the government's November 2021 Broad Status report, boiler erection began on the unit in November 2019 and the boiler was 70% complete. The unit was expected by December 2022,[12] then pushed to June 2023.[13][14]
Planet satellite imagery from January 2019 to January 2022 showed progress at the site.
The May 2023 Broad Status report stated that the Unit 6 expansion was expected to enter commercial operation in October 2023.[15]
In June 2023, the Expert Appraisal Committee recommended the extension of the project's Environmental Clearance to the new unit for an additional year, i.e. until November 26, 2024. [16]
The November 2023 Broad status report pushed back the date of commercial operation to February 2024.[17]
