Background
Black Wattle Coal Mine is an underground mine in Middleburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[3] Black Wattle Colliery (Pty) Ltd operates the mine, which is owned by the publicly listed company Bisichi. Coal from the mine is consumed domestically as well as exported through Richards Bay Coal Terminal.[3] A health and safety incident in 2005 lead to the death of an employee in the underground mine.[4]
In late-2021, Black Wattle signed an agreement to acquire an additional coal reserve contiguous to the existing Black Wattle mining area. The geological assessment, which required further drilling to ascertain its commercial viability and indicative size, indicated an expected run of mine tonnage of 6.1 million metric tonnes. According to the company, this reserve will be mined by opencast methods, the coal will be processed at Sisonke Coal Processing, and then sold into their existing markets. This new reserve, which is subject to regulatory approval, will extend Black Wattle’s life of mine to eight years.[5]
