Background
Bluff Coal Mine is an open-cut mine near the township of Bluff, Queensland, Australia.[4] The Bluff Mine is located in the southern Bowen Basin, near the township of Bluff and 20km east of Blackwater. The mine is adjacent to the Blackwater rail line which connects it to the Port of Gladstone.[4]
The mine, which started coal production in the first quarter of 2019, was placed on care and maintenance in December 2020 due to low coal prices.[5] Then, in October 2021, the Australia-based coal exploration company, Bowen Coking Coal (BCC), signed a deal to acquire the Bluff pulverized coal injection (PCI) mine from mining contractor MACA for $5 million Australian Dollars. The Bluff acquisition was completed in December 2021, and first coal was mined and shipped in June 2022.[4] Bowen's Managing Director and CEO called it "a monumental move for the company as we take the major step from explorer to becoming Australia’s next multi-mine coal producer."[6]
Bluff produces ultra-low volatile PCI coal at a rate of 1 to 1.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa).[4] However, Bowen says it is well on track to beat its production target of five million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) by the end of 2024.[7]
Marketing of Bluff's coal product is handled by a 50/50 marketing joint venture between Bowen Coking Coal and Australia-based metallurgical coal trading company, M Resources.[6]
