Background
Bogatyr Coal Mine (угольный разрез Богатырь) is a surface coal mine in Novosibirsk Region, Russia.[5]
It is not to be confused with Bogatyr coal mine in Kazakhstan. The Bogatyr Coal Mine is a proposed coal mine developed by Coalstar.[6] In 2021 a subsidiary of Coalstar Razrez Bogatyr LLC obtained a license for exploration works at Bogatyr section.[6]
In early 2022, the company planned to start producing Anthracite coal already in 2023, reaching capacity of 10 million tonnes in 10 years' time.[7] The project includes construction of a port in Primoriye with 35 Mt of capacity, to be built by another subsidiary of Coalstar. The port aims to tranship 10Mt of coal from the Bogatyr mine, coal from the Mayrykhsky coal mine, as well as oil.[8][9]
Projected investments amount to RUB 56 billion.[7] In the first year of operations (2023) the company planned to produce 1.5 Mt, and increase capacity to 10Mt in 10 years' time.[7]
It appeared that construction has started in the beginning of 2022.[10] In June 2023, it was reported that coal mining will start in 2023, however it was still necessary to carry out geological study and exploration work on the licensed area and a technical project.[11] Another source referred to delays in the start of mining due to difficult geological conditions, however 0.3 million tonnes were still planned to be mined in 2023 with full-on production starting in 2024.[12]
As of August 2024, the plan was to mine the first 0.15Mt b the end of 2024.[13] Current works were still related to geological explorations and construction of the first phase of the mine as well as railway connections. Investments will continue up to 2032.[13][14]
Environmental Concerns
In 2020, a number of environmental problems were flagged.[15] Nine settlements of the Cherepanovsky and Iskitimsky districts are located within the borders of the proposed coal mine, where almost 30 thousand people live. As a source of drinking water supply, their residents use groundwater extracted from 33 existing water wells. Coal mining at the site is assumed to be open pit. This will entail an active decrease in the dynamic levels of groundwater in the wells and their drainage. In addition, Bogatyr intersects with public railways, as well as the Novosibirsk-Barnaul highway.[15]
