Background
Boshnyakovsky coal mine (Бошняковский разрез) is a surface mine near Boshnyakovo, Uglegorsky District, Sakhalin, Russia. The mine is owned and operated by Boshnyakovsky Ugolny Razrez LLC, which in turn is owned by Seriata Investments.[4][5]
In 2017 Boshnyakovsky won a tender for the license to extract coal in a new Onnai-Yuzhny section of Boshnyakovsky coalfield.[6] The new section should have allowed the company to continue operating for longer as the previous reserves were only sufficient for another 4-5 years.[6]
The mine produced about 1 million tons of coal in 2019[4], significantly higher than a few years before.[7]
Production levels in 2021 and 2022 are not known, however as of September 2023 it appeared that the mine was operating.
Media reports from December 2023 referred to the decision of the owner to mothball the mine.[8] The mothballing of the mine will be a smooth transition method to reduce production volumes. It is planned that special equipment will be gradually moved to the Solntsevsky coal mine and other assets of the Eastern Mining Company. Eastern Mining Company LLC (VMC) will take part in the employment of employees of the Boshnyakovsky coal mine.[9]
Environmental Issues
In 2021 a local resident reported pollution in the delta of the river Onnai.[10] The Ministry of Environment already fined the company previously in 2018 for environmental damage to the water sources due to lack of appropriate filtration systems[11]. It is not known whether there were further investigations into this.
