Background

Bungursky Severny coal mine (Бунгурский-Северный разрез) is a SURFACE mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The mine is owned and operated by Bungursky Severny LLC.[9] The company's shareholders are Fanamery Holdings Ltd (50%, Cyprus), Krasnoyarsk Cement LLC (33%) and private individuals.[10][11]

The mine produces Russian grade T coal.[9]

The mine produced close to 2 million tonnes in 2018.[12] In 1H 2022, the mine produced 0.88 million tonnes of coal, which was 38% higher than in the same period in 2021.[13] This is consistent with the reported capacity of the mine at 2 million tonnes per annum.[11] Total 2022 production figure is not available.

Environmental Issues

From 2010 to 2013 the villages Alekseevka and Ananino protested against the operations of the mine, which lead to suspension of works. People went out to block heavy vehicles. There was a referendum about the coal mine with 70 houses out of 80 being against the coal mine.[14]

In August 2022 it was reported that the Bungursky Severny is planning to build a new external coal dump only 430 metres from the residential line of the Yuzhny settlement in Novokuznetsk District. The State Environmental Expertise has already been carried out. In the accompanying documents of the project it was stated that "the reason for the new dump is that there's a deficit of overburden capacity due additional coal reserves with deepening horizons below 205m at the subsoil area of "Bungursky 1-3" and "Bungursky 4-6" sections. On this basis it is proposed to increase the area of the existing dump in the eastern direction."[15][16]
