Background

The Buuruljuut coal mine is a proposed coal mine in Töv Province, Mongolia.

The mine would provide power to the Buuruljuut power station. On May 31, 2016, the Mongolia Minister of Energy signed an investment and electricity sales and purchase agreement for the Buuruljuut coal mine and an associated 2 x 300 MW coal plant, the Buuruljuut power station. The project is sponsored by Bodi International Group and Power China Resources, and is planned for Bayanjargalan District.[3]

The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in 2018.[4] In December 2018 it was reported that Bodi International LLC signed a US$566 million agreement with Sinosteel for the coal mine and coal plant.[5]

In August 2020, Mongolia's energy minister visited the Buuruljuut coal mine site.[6] According to this news report, the mine already obtained permissions to start mining activities in August 2017. The company's website also referred to the start of mining operations in 2017.[7] Planet imagery confirmed that mining activity has started from from 2017 to 2018 and further expanded from 2018 to 2024.

Operating capacity of the mine is not clear. As per 2016 source, the mine had a projected capacity of 3 Mtpa.[8] 2020 reporting indicated that the mine was expected to produce between 1.2 to 5 million tonnes of coal per year.[6]

The first unit of Buuruljuut power station was put in operation much later in October 2024.[9] It is not clear who the coal mine supplied since the start of reported mining in 2017. It is possible that coal production since 2017 has been minor but will be expanded with the the commissioning of the adjacent power plant.
