Background

Buzhanskaya Coal Mine is an underground coal mine in Volyn Oblast, Ukraine.[3] The mine's initial capacity was 0.3 million tonnes.[4]

It was planned to privatize the mine in 2016, however the outcome is unknown.[5]

A media report from November 2021 referred to the mine as not producing, the equipment outdated and no development plans. Most likely the mine would go into restructuring and also be closed.[4]

In an interview in August 2022, the general director of Volynugol stated that "the state of affairs at the mine is not the best, the coal in the mine is not actually mined and besides, it needs enrichment at Chervonograd enrichment factory. We are working to restore the work of the mine".[6] As of May 2023, the mine appeared to be operational under the new management, but with very low production levels at 2,600-2,800 per month (0.036 Mt per annum).[7]

A media source from November 2023 reported that the Buzhanskaya coal mine was being prepared for closure by the end of 2024.[8]

However it was later reported that for the first time since 2019, a new section was opened at the Buzhanska mine. This was made possible thanks to an investor who invested 27 million hryvnias and the mine continued operating.[9][10] As of November 2024, the mine was operating.[11]

In January 2025, the State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine has decided to grant Volynvugol a special permit for the extraction of hard coal at the Buzhanska mine field (seam n8), located in the Volyn region.[12]
