Federal safety concerns

In June 2011, federal officials said in a court filing that coal miners working underground were warned in advance of a search for cigarettes and lighters at the CAM 28 mine with a history of methane gas leaks. Officials were concerned a lighter's flame could ignite a deadly explosion. The inspectors had planned to search CAM Mining's No. 28 mine on June 17, 2011, after receiving a tip about miners smoking underground, but said the workers were warned about the inspection by the coal operator, despite attempts to approach underground working areas undetected.
