Background
The González Ortega power station is one of several new combined cycle power projects initiated during the six-year term of Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024). Initial plans called for the power station to receive gas from the USA in the form of LNG from the Energia Costa Azul Terminal.[9]
Official government estimates of the plant's capacity have ranged from 641 MW[10][11][12] to 683 MW[13] to 768.8 MW.[12]
Construction on the plant was originally expected to begin in August 2021.[14] Construction actually got underway in Jan 2022 and was slated for completion by Mar 2025.[10] Construction was said to be 69% to 70% complete as of Dec 31, 2023[12], and 86.2% complete by September 2024.[11]
As of September 2024, Mexico's federal electricity commission CFE anticipated that the plant would begin commercial operations in July 2025.[11]
