Background
The San Luis Río Colorado power station is one of several new combined cycle power projects initiated during the six-year term of Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
Official government estimates of the plant's capacity have ranged from 647.9 MW[10][11][12] to 680 MW[13] to 769.70 MW.[12]
Construction of the plant was originally scheduled to begin in May 2020[14] with a projected budget of 5.5 billion MXN (Mexican pesos)[15] and an anticipated completion date of 2024.[15][16]
Construction actually got underway in January 2022 and was slated for completion by January 2025.[10] The project was said to be 70% complete as of Dec 31, 2023[12], and 88% complete by September 2024.[11]
As of September 2024, Mexico's federal electricity commission CFE anticipated that the plant would begin commercial operations in June 2025.[11]
