Background

The Carbon Creek mine was a metallurgical coal mine project owned by Cardero Coal Ltd, which proposed to develop and operate an open pit metallurgical coal mine located approximately 60 kilometres northwest of Chetwynd and 40 kilometres west of Hudson's Hope in northeast British Columbia, Canada.

The project was cancelled in July 2016 due to Cardero Coal's failure to respond to the Environmental Assessment (EA) prior to deadline. While the assessment was reinstated in August 2016, there has been no public news of the Carbon Creek Mine plan in years, and the project is presumed cancelled. The proposed project would have involved open pit surface mining followed by combined open pit and underground mining. The production rate would be 4.1 million metric tonnes of metallurgical coal per year, over a mine life of 20 years. A report from 2015 indicates that the site has 290 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources and inferred resources of 161 million tonnes.

In July 2016, the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) sent a letter to Cardero Coal Ltd. saying that it was terminating a long-dormant review of major metallurgical coal mine project. The EAO considered the fact that Cordero had not replied to previous correspondence as indication that the company did not wish to proceed with the EA for the project. And because they failed to hear from them by the June 18, 2016 deadline, the project was withdrawn from the EA process.

In August 2016, the project was reinstated into the environmental assessment process, however, there has been little to no public news of the project's status since this date. What's more, project owner Cardero Resource was acquired by World Copper in 2021, and there is no mention of any coal assets on the new website.
