Carbon casting

Carbon casting is a technique for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Developed by Bill Gates' climate solutions accelerator Breakthrough Energy, carbon casting captures the carbon from biomass -- byproducts of the timber and agriculture industries that would normally be burned or left to decompose. Instead of allowing the biomass to release its carbon back into the atmosphere, carbon casting dries and condenses the biomass into blocks and stores them in underground sites.

Graphyte, a startup company that has built a factory to implement the technology, claims that carbon casting requires less energy and is less expensive than other techniques for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). "Because of the simplicity of the process, the company is already able to charge as little as $100/ton of carbon removal," according to a March 2024 Energy Monitor report.[1] However, scaling the technology may be difficult due to limited availability of biomass feedstock.
