Background

Chaba Coal Mine is a surface and underground mine in Hwange, Zimbabwe. Hwange Colliery Company Limited operates the mine, which is a publicly listed company, the government of Zimbabwe is the largest shareholder owning 36% of the company. Mining began in 2006 and the life-of-mine is expected to run until 2046. The mine supplies thermal coal to the nearby Hwange power station, as well as metallurgical coal to export markets. It is listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, with secondary listings on the London and Johannesburg stock exchanges.
