Background on Mine
The Chasnala mine is operated by Iron & Steel Company (IISCO), a subsidiary of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).[3]
According to the company's 2023 annual report, on account of the unavailability of sand for stowing, coal production at Chasnalla Colliery was suspended from November, 2020. Subsequently, on obtaining the necessary approval for stowing with a mixture of sand and bottom ash and both being available, production at Chasnalla Colliery resumed from 22nd July, 2022.[4]
Chasnala Mining Disaster
In 1975, the mine was the site of the Chasnala mining disaster after an explosion and subsequent flooding killed 380 miners. The film Kaala Patthar depicts the tragedy, and Shaheed Smarak was built in the memory of the victims.
