Background
Chervonogradska Coal Mine is an underground coal mine in Lviv Oblast, Ukraine. The mine is located in the Lviv-Volyn coal basin.
In 2020 and 2021, the mine's production was said to be about 0.5 Mt.[2][3] During its 50 years of operations achieved in 2021, the mine produced 29.6 million tonnes of coal (0.6 per annum on average).[4] Total production by Lvivgughiliya in 2021 was 1.173 Mt in 2021.[2]
The miners pf Chervonogradska protested in December 2021 as they haven't been paid salaries for 3 months.[3]
Ukraine promised to abandon coal mining by 2035. It is supported on this path by a number of international structures, in particular, the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).[5] The project to transform the Chervonograd coal microregion within the framework of the Program "Supporting Structural Changes in the Coal Regions of Ukraine" is being implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection of Germany.[6] It appears that Velikomostovskaya Coal Mine was selected as the pilot one for transformation.[6][7]
There are six state-owned mines in the Chervonohrad microregion and one private joint-stock company, the Nadiya mine in Sosnivka. But over the past few years, the volume of coal mined by them has significantly decreased.[5]
