Background

In 2009, the coastal area of Chhara in Junagadh was among three sites raised as possible locations, in addition to Jamnagar and Kandla, for a second ultra mega power plant in Gujarat, alongside the Tata Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project, according to Sushil Kumar Shinde, union minister of power told reporters here in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. In 2017, the government under Vijay Rupani announced that it was dropping the project due to surplus generation capacity and the desire to focus on renewable power.
