Background
The Chiayi Plant CY power station (台塑嘉義發電廠) is a 40-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Chiayi County, Taiwan.[2][3]
In Nan Ya Plastics Corporation's 2021 Sustainability Report (published June 2022), it was reported that the company was planning to convert several of its coal-fired captive power stations (primarily at chemical plants) to gas-fueled power units before 2030.[4] The following coal-to-gas conversions were planned to take place, or had already taken place, between 2021 and 2030:
- 2021: Linkou utility plant (Conversion had already taken place at the time of reporting)
- 2022: "Utility plants in Shulin site and Kung San site [sic]"
- 2023: "Utility plant in Chiayi site [sic]"
- 2030: "Utility plants in Jinxing site [sic]."[4]
In the 2023 Annual Report of Nan Ya Plastics (published in June 2023), there was no mention of the Chiayi power plant's conversion progress, though the Linkou and Shulin plants' coal-to-gas conversions were confirmed in the report as complete.[5]
An online update from Formosa Plastics in January 2024 mentioned the company's investment in a solar power installation project at the Chiayi Plant in 2023, but there was no mention of the coal-fired unit's retirement.[6]
