Coal Mountain Mine was a surface coal mine owned by Teck Coal and located 30 kilometres southeast of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia, Canada.[1]
The mine reached the end of its life in 2018 and was permanently closed in early 2019.[2]
Location
The satellite image below shows the exact location of the now-closed mine.
Background
Located in British Columbia's Elk Valley, the Coal Mountain mine originally began operations as an underground mine in the early 1900s, then transitioned into open pit operations in the 1940s.[1][3] In 2008, Coal Mountain came under Teck Coal ownership during Teck's acquisition of the Fording Canadian Coal Trust's assets.[3]
The mine site was 3,836 hectares of coal lands, of which approximately 1,016 hectares were scheduled for mining.
Coal Mountain produced metallurgical coal used for steelmaking. This coal was shipped to bulk port terminals in Vancouver by rail, then transferred to larger seagoing vessels, which carried it to Teck Resources' target markets in the Asia-Pacific region.[1]
Closure
Pit operations at the Coal Mountain mine were suspended in the third quarter of 2018 as it reached the end of its mine life.[2] However, the mine didn't close until May 2019, as coal from stockpiles and from Teck’s other operations was processed intermittently through the Coal Mountain plant and load out facilities.[2][4]
Although the mine is considered retired, it is technically under care and maintenance and will remain so for 10 years.[4] Following this care and maintenance period, the mine will undergo closure activities from 2028 to 2036, and post closure activities in 2036 and the years beyond.[4]
