Background

Colbún LNG Terminal was a proposed LNG terminal in Valparaíso, Chile.

The terminal was a joint-venture project by Chilean energy companies Colbún and AES Gener. Colbún is owned by the Matte family, while AES Gener is a subsidiary of the US AES energy company. The project had faced delays due to difficulty in finding a proper location for the terminal. Additionally, the expansion of the Quintero LNG Terminal has made the Colbún LNG Terminal project unnecessary, unless future conditions change. Both Colbún and AES Gener are already supplied with gas from the Quintero LNG Terminal.

In 2014, AES Gener and Colbún cancelled their contract with Norwegian company Höegh, which was to install the floating LNG regasification plant, officially shelving the project. There have been no development updates since then, and the project is presumed to be cancelled.
