The Compute North Upton County facility is an operating 280 MW bitcoin mining operation located near McCamey, Texas, USA. It is owned by Compute North and provides exclusive hosting capacity to Marathon Digital.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the Compute North Upton County facility near McCamey, Texas, USA.
Background
As of August 2022, the project has been initially energized and is on track to be mining at the full capacity of 280 MW.[1] The facility is located adjacent to the King Mountain Wind Farm, which has an installed capacity of 278.2 MW.[2] In an August 8, 2022 press release, Compute North describes the facility as "mark[ing] the first behind-the-meter wind project of its kind." However, the wind farm already has three customers: Reliant Energy (198.9 MW), Austin Energy (76.7 MW) and Texas-New Mexico Power Company (2.6 MW).[2] These three customers account for all 278.2 MW of the wind farm's nameplate capacity.
According to its press release, Compute North "helps resolve the Texas grid constraints by bringing computing workloads directly to the generation source and eliminates the need for costly transmission lines." However, because all capacity from the wind farm is currently accounted for, it is unclear what Compute North is referring to with this statement. It is therefore assumed that the majority of the 280 MW required for the bitcoin mine is being supplied by grid power originating from an existing substation approximately .4 miles from the mining location, and that the mining operation may only occasionally utilize excess wind capacity from the wind farm.
