Background
The 96,000-square-foot Core Scientific Grand Forks County facility was commissioned in November of 2021, reaching full operating capacity in March 2022. [1] The facility sources its power from two local utility providers, Nodak Electric Cooperative and Minnkota Power Cooperative.[2] According to their websites, both utility providers offer a lignite coal dominant (55%) energy mix with the remaining being sourced from renewables (wind, 34%; hydroelectric, 8%). The coal is sourced from the Milton R. Young Station while the hydroelectric power is purchased from the Garrison Dam in central North Dakota.[3] [4] The facility is taking advantage of reduced electricity fees targeting operations using more than 20 MW of energy.
