Background

In 2018, Core Scientific announced its plans to develop a sizable $42 million dollar cryptomining facility on the site of a vacant factory in Dalton, GA. [1] The site had an operational capacity of 20 to 35 megawatts before reaching the target capacity of 170 MW after the facility was expanded in 2021. [2] [3]Prior to operations at the Core Scientific Whitfield County facility, Dalton Utilities, the local utility provider from which the facility sources its power, had a peak load demand of 275 MW.[4] According to its website, the utility sources its power from various sources which include nuclear, coal, and natural gas power plants as well as purchasing hydroelectric and solar power.[5] Dalton Utilities sources 90.57% of its MWh from two nuclear power plants, Plant Vogtle and Plant Hatch.
