Background

Dalate power station is a 3,180 MW coal-fired power station in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, owned by China Huaneng. The plant's existing eight units were completed between 1995 and 2007:[1]

  • Units 1-4 (330 MW each, subcritical) - operating 1995
  • Units 5-6 (330 MW each, subcritical) - operating 2004
  • Units 7-8 (600 MW each, supercritical) - operating 2007

Proposed expansion

China Huaneng has proposed adding a Units 9 & 10 at the power station, totaling 2,000 MW (1,000 MW each).[2][3][4]

Plans for the expansion appeared cancelled in the wake of China's traffic light policy. The policy, first issued in 2016, limited coal plant development in certain regions, including Inner Mongolia. (For more information, see China's Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.)

However, the traffic light policy was loosened in February 2020 and Inner Mongolia was issued a green light for coal plant development. In March 2020, plans for the project were revived.[5] In April 2020, Unit 9 completed a pre-feasibility report.[6] In May 2020, unit 9 was permitted for construction. It is planned for operation in 2022.[7]

Construction on Unit 9 reportedly began in May 2022[8] and progress steadily.[9][10]

With no recent news regarding Unit 10, it was presumed shelved.
