Background

Da-ma Coal Mine is a small surface mine near the town of Utrecht, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.[1] Da-ma coal mine is owned and operated by the private company business Thutha Amalahle Transport and Construction (Pty) Ltd. It is situated within the eMadlangeni local municipality between the towns of Utrecht, which lies 13.5 km south-east of the mine, and Newcastle, which lies 32.5 km to the mine's south-west. The mining right area covers an extent of 1,844.68 hectares, however, the existing opencast infrastructure only occupies 27 hectares.[1] Since 2018, the coal mine on site has been trucked to the nearby Chelmsford coal mine for further processing.

The life of the mine is estimated at 14-20 years.[1]
