Background

Deokcheon Coal Mining Complex (덕천지구탄광연합기업소) is a complex of mines in Jinam-do, Deokcheon City, South Pyongan Province, North Korea.

The Deokcheon Coal Mining Complex includes Deokcheon Coal Mine, Deokseong Coal Mine, Jinam Coal Mine, Seochang Youth Coal Mine, Hyeongbong Coal Mine, Wolbong Coal Mine, Namyang Coal Mine, and Obong Coal Mine.[3]

Coal produced is mainly supplied to the Pukchang power station.[3]

According to USGS Minerals Yearbook 2017-2018 and 2019 the joint capacity of the mines of the complex is 4 million tonnes per annum.[4][5]

KDB's State of Industry 2020 report provided the following additional information about selected mines of the complex: [6]

- Namyang Coal Mine is located in Bukchang-gun, Pyongannam-do. In 1993, the underground belt conveyor construction was completed. Through this facility, the coal produced in the underground pit is transported to the coal storage site. In 2018, a new coal layer was built in the Pulsaegol area of Namyang Coal Mine, increasing coal production through basic drilling

- Jinan Coal Mine is located in Jinan Workers' District, Deokcheon City. In 1992, a belt conveyor with a total length of 4,170 m was completed, with production capacity increasing to 700,000 tonnes per year.

- Seochang Youth Coal Mine is located in Sangdeok-dong, Deokcheon-si, and has an annual production capacity of 750,000 tonnes. It is estimated that 250,000 tonnes are produced.
