Background
After starting operations at its American Axle facility in Buffalo, NY, Digihost began developing cryptocurrency mining operations at the 60 MW Fortistar North Tonawanda power station, a gas plant which it moved to purchase in March of 2021.[1] Digihost brought in mining rigs in modular containers which are located on the grounds of the power plant, but Digihost does not draw power directly from the power plant, as there is no power purchase agreement with Fortistar, and Digihost does not yet own the power plant to supply its own electrical requirements[2]. As of July 2022, the sale of the power plant to Digihost is being litigated by environmental groups and final approval of the sale has not been granted by the Public Utilities Commission.
Residents living close to the operation have complained about the noise emitting from the modular mining containers at the site. [3][4] Digihost plans to address these concerns by building a noise barrier and monitoring noise levels. [5]
