Background

Droogvallei Coal Mine is a surface and underground mine in Carolina, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[2]

The status of the mine is unclear, but it appears to be mothballed. Droogvallei Colliery is located about 245 kilometers east of Johannesburg (via N12 and N4) and 7 km southeast of Carolina. Estrapade (Pty) Ltd operates the mine, which is owned by Coastal Fuels (Pty) Ltd. The mine opened in 2001. Underground mining ceased in 2011. The mine and wash plant have been on care and maintenance for a number of years.

In 2020 Geo Soil and Water, acting on behalf of the owners, prepared a water and waste management plan in order to renew the mine's water use license. There are currently plans to resume mining of the remaining 0.756 million tonnes of underground resources. The mine is situated on a watershed between two river catchments and there is a significant risk of groundwater contamination from the wash plant.[2]
