Background on Mine

The Durgapur Extension Deep OC Phase-II coal mine of 3 MTPA in an area of 1622.50 ha is located in District Chandrapur, State Maharashtra, India. The proposal for environemnt clearance to project of Durgapur Extension Deep OC Phase-II (in Wardha Valley Coalfield) sought an expansion in area to 1622.50 ha, which includes 1186.54 ha of the existing land (includes 257.77 ha of forest land), additional area of 410.96 ha (includes 121.58 ha of forest land) and 25 ha for village rehabilitation. The EC for the phase-I was granted on 16 March, 2012 to Durgapur Opencast expansion project from 2.30 MTPA to 3 MTPA in mine lease area of 1186.54 ha. It was stated that the increase in total project area from 1186.54 ha to 1622.50 ha with the mining capacity remaining the same, would result in sustainability of coal mining operations, assured supply of coal to the consumers and increase in the life of the mine ultimately.[1]

However, deep concerns were raised on this expansion primarily due to its nearness to the tiger habitats, which is just 12.25km from Tadoba in Chandrapur. Former National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) member Kishor Rithe said that the extended Durgapur mine is located next to Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) and will spell doom for not only tigers but also people, who are facing critical health hazards from pollution. He added that the site is close to TATR where human-wildlife conflict is already high. Tadoba tigers are already crying for space, and new open cast mines in this region will have devastating effect.[2]
