Durgapur Projects Limited power station is an operating power station of at least 550-megawatts (MW) in Durgapur, Bardhaman, West Bengal, India with multiple units, some of which are not currently operating. It is also known as D.P.L. TPS, DPL TPS.

Background

The power station is owned by Durgapur Projects Limited, a government enterprise of West Bengal owned by West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited. The plant comprises the following units:[1]

  • Unit 1 - 30 MW - 1960 - retired
  • Unit 2 - 30 MW - 1960 - retired
  • Unit 3 - 70 MW - 1964 - retired 2017[2]
  • Unit 4 - 75 MW - 1964 - retired 2017[2]
  • Unit 5 - 75 MW - 1966 - retired 2017[2]
  • Unit 6 - 110 MW - 1987 - retired 2020[3]
  • Unit 7 - 300 MW - 2008
  • Unit 8 - 250 MW - 2014


The Durgapur Projects Ltd website confirmed that the first six units of the plant had been retired (exact dates unspecified), and that Units 7 and 8 remained in operation as of at least 2019, and likely beyond that time.[4]

Expansion

Durgapur Projects Ltd has proposed a 300 MW extension known as Unit 8, or unit 7a.[5] It was listed as under construction in 2012, and scheduled for completion in December 2013.[6]

In June 2014 it was reported that unit 8 would start generation by the next month.[7]
