Background
The Dysart East coal project is a proposed underground hard coking coal mine. The proposed site lies seven kilometres east of the township of Dysart in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland, Australia.[1] In April 2018 planning permission was secured for the Dysart East coal project.[2]
Bengal Coal says that "The mine’s products are in high demand from the key steel producing markets of China, Japan, India and South Korea. The asset is in close proximity to Norwich Park and Saraji mines, has existing power infrastructure and a rail line on site, and is adjacent to unmined coal resources."[3]
The mine has been approved with an end date of 2039.[2]
Bengal Coal is a private Australian company incorporated in 2009 with the purpose of developing the Dysart East Coal Project from an Exploration Permit for Coal to an operating mine. The company’s major shareholder is Indian coke producer Bengal Energy who produce coke for the Indian steel market from their facility in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Bengal Energy is the largest merchant LAM coke producer in eastern India.[4]
At the end of 2020, as the project continued to advance, operators began to bid on contracts.[5]
In late 2022, Dysart Coal Mine Management Pty Ltd (DCMM), who manages the development of the project, readied to prepare a final bankable feasibility study focusing on developing a mining operation utilizing continuous miners, shuttle cars and mobile bolters. The study is expected to take 20 weeks to complete. On completion of the study, and subject to final board and funding approvals, etc., DCMM plans to appoint the Mastermyne Group as the mining services contractor.[6]
