Background
Eckman Surface Mine is a coal mining operation in McDowell County, West Virginia, operated by Extra Energy and owned by Cleveland-CLiffs. [2] The mine is operated by Extra Energy, Inc. since 2004.[2] Extra Energy became a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc when the latter bought Extra Energy's previous parent company ArcelorMittal USA in December 2020. Both ArcelorMittal and Cleveland Cliffs are steel producers.[3]
The mine produced 0.3 million short tons in 2020, and had 65 employees. Eckman Mine's production has been in decline since 2016, when it peaked at 0.7 million tons. The mine has also been laying off workers since the first quarter of 2019, when it employed 111 workers. As of 2021, only 44 employees work at Eckman..[2]
