Background

Elandsfontein Colliery is an opencast and underground coal mine in the Nkangala District, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.[3] Elandfsfontein Colliery is situated approximately 10 km south of Delmas, off the R42 road in the Emalahleni Local Municipality, immediately west of the village of Clewer.[4] Owned by Anker Coal and Mineral Holdings, the mine produces coal for the local and export markets at a rate of 500,000 tonnes per annum. The quality of the coal dictates that the coal will be used in the power generation sector. The coal will be sold as an export product (approximately 60%) and a domestic product (approximately 40%) to Eskom.[4] Historically, it's coal has been produced from the No. 1 Seam (underground bord-and-pillar operation) and an opencast operation on the No. 4 and No. 2 Seams.[4]

The existing opencast operations have an approximate extent of 257 hectares, while the mine's underground footprint covers an approximate area of 182 hectares. A total area of 830 hectares was granted in the mining lease.[4]
