Empire District Electric Company describes itself as "an investor-owned, regulated utility company, based in Joplin, Missouri, that provides electricity, natural gas (through its wholly owned subsidiary, The Empire District Gas Company), and water service, with approximately 215,000 customers in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas." It has 1,255 megawatts (MW) of installed power generation capacity.[1]

Carbon Sequestration
Empire is currently seeking a Missouri Carbon Sequestration project with Ameren, Aquila, Associated Electric Cooperative, City Utilities of Springfield, and Kansas City Power & Light. The first phase began in 2006. The Department of Energy is providing over $2.5 million in funds, with the funding partners providing another 20% matching funds.[2]
