Background

The ArcelorMitttal Nippon Steel India plant in Hazira, Gujarat is one of the largest steel plants in India. The first phase of the plant was commissioned in 1995.[1] The hazira mill was originally built by the Ruia family-owned Essar Steel.[2] The plant was sold to ArcelorMitttal Nippon under Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code process in 2019.[1][3]

On 28 September, 2022, the company announced its plan to expand the plant with an addition of two blast furnaces at a total cost of US $7.4 billion which will increase its crude steel production capacity from 9 mtpa to 15 mtpa.[4] The construction of the expansion project began in October 2022 and is expected to be completed in 2026.[5][6] Phase 2A and Phase 2B expansion would see capacity rise to 18 mtpa by 2028 and 24 mtpa by 2030, respectively.[7]

As of November 2023, debottlenecking and Phase I upstream and downstream expansion were ongoing. ArcelorMittal’s 975MW renewable energy project in India was on track for completion in the first half of 2024. The project is expected to provide over 20% of AMNS Hazira plant electricity requirements.[8][9]

In December 2023, ArcelorMitttal Nippon Steel India announced its plans to set up three dedicated scrap-processing centres in Gujarat (one in Hazira and another in Ahmedabad) and Maharashtra (in Khopoli) and expects to increase scrap in its EAFs by 9%.[10][11]

In January 2025, the company announced it was set to commission its 2 million tonne auto-focused cold rolling mill from March this year.[12]
