In the GEM Global Steel Plant Tracker, steel product categories are defined as flat and long, using World Steel Association definitions, as follows:
- flat products are a "type of finished rolled steel product like steel strip and plate"[1]
- long products are a "type of finished rolled steel product like rail and steel bars"[1]
