Background
In December 2018 First Gen Corp and Tokyo Gas Co signed a preliminary agreement to jointly develop an offshore liquefied natural gas import terminal project in Batangas.[5] Later in December 2018 First Gen submitted its application to the Department of Energy (DOE) for a notice to proceed (NTP) to construct the FGEN Batangas LNG terminal project.[6]
In 2019, the proposal for the facility evolved from an onshore terminal to an interim, offshore facility that would eventually be replaced by an onshore facility.
Interim FSRU terminal
In late 2019, First Gen noted interest in establishing an "interim" floating storage resgasification unit at the Batangas LNG site, which would allow LNG to be introduced into the Philippine market as early as 2022.[7][8] This was in response to the depleting resources in the Malampaya gas field, and looming expiry of contracts there in 2024.[7]
In October 2024, the interim FSRU began operations.[9] See the separate page on FGEN Batangas FSRU for more information.
