Background

The Fila Maestra Mine is a proposed coal mine in Venezuela. In October 2017 Venezuela's government mining agency Minera Nacional undertook initial exploratory studies to determine the quality and quantity of thermal coal reserves available at the Fila Maestra II and III mines, located near the municipalities of Clarines, Valle Guanape, El Alambre and Aguas Calientes in Anzoátegui, Venezuela.

In April 2019 Venezuelan government officials announced plans to invest €9 million in a partnership with the private Venezuelan company Carbones Guri Guri to develop Fila Maestra II and III, with the goal of certifying available reserves within two years and beginning preliminary mining operations as soon as possible. According to initial estimates, the mine is capable of producing 500,000 tonnes of thermal coal per annum for export to Guyana, in addition to an unspecified quantity for domestic use in Venezuela's electricity and steel sectors.
