Background

Fong-Yaghnob Coal Mine is a surface and underground mine in Soghd region, Tajikistan. The mine is owned and operated by Mine Fong-Yaghnob, which in turn is owned by state-owned Angisti Tojik (Tajik Coal) with 57.7%.[8][9][10]

The Fong-Yaghnob coal field stretches up to 24 km in a narrow strip in the north-west direction, the area is about 102 km2 and is conventionally divided into three parts: Western, Central and Eastern. The central part of the field, in turn, is divided into three sections: Kukhi-Maleksky, Ravatsky and Dzhizhikrutsky. The Karyerny site is an integral part of the Eastern area.[11]

The absolute height of the site is 1680-2800 m. Fan-Yagnob Mine was built in mid-80s. The mine field has been opened by mine galleries, the chamber-and-pillar method is applied.[10]

According to a media source from 2017, open surface mining started recently[12] and another source from 2022 referred to both underground and surface mining by the Shakhta Fong-Yaghnob.[13]

The mine produces bituminous coal that can be used in thermal power plants or in metallurgy.[14]

According to the company's website, the mine supplies 60% of coal produced in Tajikistan (however this may be outdated).[15]

In a media article from 2020 it was reported that coal production of the mine in 8 months of 2020 reached 0.545 million tonnes.[16] In 2021, the mine produced 0.736 million tonnes.[17] In 7 months of 2022, the mine produced 0.35 million tonnes.[13] In seven months of 2023, the mine produced 0.388 million tonnes..[7]

In 2021, Tajikistan produced 2.1 million tonnes of coal (1.7 million from the Soghd region where the mine is located).[18] In 2022, this level of production (2.1Mt) was achieved already in the 11 months.[19] Coal production in 2024 reached 2.6 million tonnes, increasing by 485 thousand tonnes compared to the previous year.[20]

Incidents

In January 2025, three miners died in the underground mine after a rock collapse.[21]
