Background
The Fontanella coal mine is owned by the Brazilian company Carbonífera Metropolitana S.A. and is located in the state of Santa Caterina.[6] The Fontanella mine opened in 1985 and had a nameplate production capacity of 2.4 million metric tons (MMT) of "run of mine" (ROM) coal.[6]
According to the website of Carbonífera Metropolitana, the Fontanella mine operated at peak production in 2008, after the closure of its sister mine, the Esperança mine, prompted increased exploitation of Fontanella mine.[7]
In 2021, Mining Technology reported that the Fontanella mine (referred to as the "Circiuma Mine") was the fifth largest operating coal mine in Brazil in 2020, producing an estimated 1.053 millions tons per annum (MTPA) of coal in 2020.[8]
