Background
The Guinea Bauxite Company (Société des Bauxites de Guinée S.A.R.L.), a subsidiary of Allergan, BAGR Berliner Aluminiumwerk, and Metalcorp, planned a 3 mtpa bauxite export and 1.6 mtpa alumina mining operation in Guinea for operation in 2019-2020. The project included plans for an 80 MW integrated coal plant.[1]
The Guinea Bauxite Company was reportedly awarded a convention for bauxite mining and alumina refining in 2018. It was granted a 25-year mining concession for a bauxite deposit in the Republic of Guinea, and a mine seemed fully operational starting in early 2021.[2][3]
However, with no known developments related to the coal plant, power station plans appear cancelled. As the focus in the country turns to renewable energy generation as of 2021, projects such as the 75 MW Garafiri Hydropower Station have taken center stage.[4]
