Background

The Garjanbahal coal mine is a 2.81 million ton-per-annum (MTPA) opencast mine, operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, part of the Ib Valley coal mines in Sundergarh, Odisha, India.

The company had an ongoing expansion plan to reach 10 MTPA in 2030. The mine would provide power to the proposed Basundhara power station. But in response to a right of information request in 2021, the mine is not listed by the Government of India as an active new mine project. It is presumed shelved. The mine opened in 2018-2019, operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India. During its first year, it produced 2.81 million tonnes-per-annum.
