Background
The Ghana–Côte d'Ivoire Gas Pipeline is a proposed bidirectional 20-inch, 52-km natural gas pipeline running between the gas processing plant near Atuabo, in the Western region of Ghana, to the border with Cote d'Ivoire. It would allow natural gas to be traded between the two countries. In July 2019, Ghana's Ministry of Energy and Ghana National Gas Company signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Cote d'Ivoire for trade of gas through the pipeline between the two countries.[2]
As of September 2021, over two years had passed since the pipeline was proposed in July 2019, and there had beed no evidence of further development and the pipeline was considered shelveld. However, in March 2023, it was reported that Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire had revealed intentions construct the two-way gas pipeline, allowing both countries to receive gas based on their needs. This decision stems from the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) signed between the two countries in 2017[3]. The pipeline is therefore considered to be proposed.
