Background

The Glisnice coal mine, located in Glisnica deposit, is a proposed open-pit coal mine owned by Rudnik Uglja (RUPV) in Montenegro. Approximately 300,000 tons of coal will be mined annually in Glisnica and will be transported by trucks to Pljevlje. The government granted the concession for detailed geological research and coal mining to the Coal Mine for the period from April 1 2022 until April 1, 2029. The Glisnica mine would operate for a total of five years with a projected annual capacity of around 300,000 tons. The coal would be taken from Glisnica by trucks to the Maljevac crushing plant near the Pljevlja thermal power plant, 20,5 kilometers away.[3]

In September 2024, it was reported that there will be no coal mining in Glisnice. Approval for exploitation was not obtained because the Environmental Protection Agency did not give a positive opinion on the study on environmental protection assessment. According to the company, all analysis showed that it is unprofitable to start coal exploitation in that area.[4]
