Background on Mine
The Gondegaon Extension Opencast Coal Mine Expansion project also known as Amalgamated Gondegaon-Ghatrohan OC mine of 3.5 MTPA is located in the villages of Gondegaon & Ghatrohan, Tehsil Parseoni, Dstrict Nagpur in the State of Maharashtra, India. The mine started as Gondegaon Opencast mine with capacity of 1.5 MTPA and received Environment Clearance on 17 June 2006. The Ministry of Environment & forests further accorded environmental clearance for the Gondegaon Opencast Coal Mine Project of M/s WCL for expansion in production of coal from 1.5 MTPA to 2.5 MTPA rated capacity in a lease area of 917 ha on 15 July, 2009.[10] The mine further got an environemnt clearance for increase in its production capacity to 3.5 MTPA on the same lease area on 14 March, 2018 for one year.[11] The EC was further renewed for one more year on March 28, 2019.[12]
The project involves the displacement of 721 Project Affected Families (PAFs) whose resettlement and rehabilitatin is being carried out as per policy of Coal India and State of Maharashtra.
Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has also developed this mine as part of eco-mining tourism project and developed an eco park of 16 acre in 2016[13] between two of its operational mines — Saoner underground mine and Gondegaon opencast mine. WCL says that this novel initiative has been taken with the aim of dispelling notions of pollution and environmental degradation related to coal and mining operations in India. At the eco-park tourists can enjoy the nature and also learn about the mining environment before entering into the real mines.[14]
