Background
The Grosvenor coal project is an underground coal mine operated by Anglo Coal Australia, a subsidiary of Anglo American, near Moranbah in the northern region of the Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia.
The mine recently resumed operation following a methane explosion in May 2020.[6] Originally, the coal project had a national commissioning date of 2013, to produce 4.3 million tonnes of hard coking coal. The project would cost $1.1 billion to construct and employ 1000 people during construction and 300 when operating.[7]
On its website, Anglo states that the Grosvenor project is a $AUS1.1 billion project which would produce "up to seven million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of run-of-mine (ROM) coal, which would be processed to produce approximately five Mtpa of coking coal for export." The project would be located next to Anglo's Moranbah North mine. The company states that the project will use the longwall mining method to mine coal with an anticipated mine life in excess of 30 years.[8]
Mining Accidents
On 6 May 2020, a methane explosion occurred at Grosvenor Mine, injuring six miners.[9] Ultimately, Anglo made the decision to permanently seal the part of the longwall panel where the methane ignition incident occurred.[10] Operations at the mine remained suspended from the incident date to February 2022, during which time mining development activities — such as significant investment in new equipment, and the development of new technologies — took place in an effort to enhance the safe operation of the mine.[11]
