Background

In January 2022, the construction of the gas pipeline pipes commenced.[5][6] The construction was expected to be completed in 2023.[8]

The pipeline is to supply gas to an LNG plant and a gas processing facility in Ust-Luga to produce LNG and other products such as polyethylene.[3]

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the sanctions and the withdrawal of partners, including Linde GmbH, may have delayed the project.[9] Russia is considering alternatives such as domestic turbines or partnering with China.[10][11] As of July 2023, the status of the project is uncertain, with the latest update in December 2022 claiming that the LNG plant was in construction.[10]

With the Nord Stream pipelines mothballed, there is a surplus of gas in the region, which may also lead to a delay for the Gryazovets-Volkhov Gas Pipeline.

In February 2024, testing of the road surface was performed on the pipeline indicating that the construction was nearing completion.[7]
